Atlanta has given us more than an abundant of artists, producers, and talent since the beginning of hip hop and the city has no plans on stopping. In this decade, Atlanta’s sound has dominated every aspect of rap and now the city has catapulted one of the most innovative rappers back into the forefront this year.
A Two-9 group member in 2009 and originally signed to Mike Will’s EarDrummers, Key!, has come a long way as a solo artist. From his early mixtapes Martin Luther Key and F Key 1 with producer Fki, Key! found his charismatic energy on songs since the beginning.
Key!’s flow can’t be imitated as it naturally bounces on the beat and he can switch flows so smoothly mid verse. He may not be the most standout lyricist but his lyrics are delivered so emphatically that it strikes harder than if any other rapper were to say the same line. Additionally, his bars are clever and catchy, which makes his sound such a lethal style. It’s surprising that he hasn’t had a hit song break into the mainstream yet.
Kenny Beats undeniably brought Key!’s sound to its full potential in their most recent collab mixtape, 777, that is full of lively tracks for any rap fan. Effortless hooks and casual but banging production created one of the best albums of 2018 and Key!’s best work to date. “Kelly Price Freestyle” and “Demolition 1+2” are standout tracks that highlights Key!’s creative manner. Definitely check him out for fresh, original music.
